Traces of the hut complex can be see in the air photo of 1975. Just north of the areial mast closest to the main driveway into Suara. Here are John's own comments about the photograph. " This photograph looking south shows the transmitter hut and two of the masts. The small huts in the foreground housed the temporary diesel alternator sets, used before dockyard mains was on site. The main huts were double skinned for insulation against the heat of the sun. The outer consisted of two or more "Romney" huts end to end, enclosing smaller diameter "Nissen" huts, so there was a space of about three feet between them, useful for running cabling and storing things . ( although the locally employed "Coolie" labourers tended to take a kip theresometimes.) At the right hand end of the tx hut the installation of the maindiesel alternators ( three of 35 Kw each I think) is starting. Note the extractor fans along the top of the huts." Notice the two aeroplanes passing by at the top of the picture. |
