This Royal Naval Wireless station, one of many dotted throughout the British sphere of influence, was located within the confines of the the Naval Base, adjacent to HMS Terror near Sembawang on the northern coast of Singapore Island.

The Commanding Officer while I was at Suara was Lt. Cdr. J.J. Foggin and the "Chief" was CRE Ron Plowright. As all know, Suara was established before the outbreak of WWII and was, as far as we know, blown up by the British forces before the Japanese took the island.

You'll find a short history of HMS Terror and a map of the area here

About myself

My name is Randal McDowell. I was stationed at Suara from January 1965 until July 1966. Originally from N. Ireland I left the RN in 1973 , moved to Norway and raised a family near Stavanger on Norway's south west coast. As interest for the site increases (maybe it won't), I'll increase the content as I receive more pictures and information from people out there who have shared the "Suara" experience. Please don't hesitate in contacting me especially if I don't owe you money !

I'd be happy to hear from you.

Why a Website for Suara ?

While surfing the web a couple of years ago I found a website (since closed) dedicated to the Naval Base in Singapore. I sent a few pictures to the Nora Abdul Rahman who was managing the site. As a result of which I have been contacted by ex-Suara people from all over the world. Some RN, Royal Signals and Australian and New Zealand service staff who served at Suara at some point in time have sent pictures of their time in Singapore which are included in the site.

The site is dedicated to the people who have shared the "Suara Experience".
