Here are a selection of old pictures taken around the limestone mill.

An advertisment (very romantic) few of the Limestone mill workings from around the beginning of the 1900's. |

| As closest neighbour to the Limestone Mill we managed to grow up without an serious accidents and spend many happy days running after the wagons and jumping on and off. Much to the anoyannce of Johnny Leach who was responsible for the movement of the wagons from the harbour to the Engine House (by the kilns on Waterfall Rd). | ||
The limestone wagons lined up above the chutes used for loading into the boats
The empty wagons were pulled up this incline by the weight of the loaded wagons coming down towards the harbour. At the top of the line there was a large brakewheel which controlled the speed. In the middle (the cutting in the backgorund) the wagons used to pass each other.

The Enginne House (located beside the kilns) This was used to pull and lower the wagons from the harbour part of the way up to the quarry. From this point on the "gravity system" took over. Notice the signaling system - no internet solutions here!
View from the Engine House looking toward the mill and on towards the harbour. The Croft Rd is on the left of the picture

Bags of newly crushed limestone ready for loading (manually) onto the chutes. Back breaking-work for the men on land and on the boats.
Up though the years a lot of boats came to pick up limestone. From the puffers of the Clyde to Dutch coasters. Here are a few of these boats.

MV. Grietje berthed in Carnlough Harbour. Notice the loading chutes. Jan Bakker, the skipper to the Grietje, married my father's cosuin Jean Ogilby and has settled down in Carnlough.
The Moonlight was typical of the boats which frequented Carnlough & Glenarm Harbours to collect limestone in the 50's. Other names I remember were the Sealight, Starlight, Sunlight to name but a few.
